The words “saved” or “salvation” bring different ideas to people’s minds. Perhaps you have had an experience when you were saved from something: a near accident, an angry dog, drowning. If you have experienced one of these events or something similar, you know firsthand the impending doom you were facing. You also know that to be saved requires the outside aid of another person.

There are many ways in which a person may require physical salvation. But did you know that each person also requires spiritual salvation? In order to understand what spiritual salvation is, we need to back up and get a little history.

YOU have missed the mark!

MissingtheMark

The Bible tells us that every person has “sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). To come short of God’s glory means that we miss God’s mark. What is this mark? To keep His law perfectly; which none of us have done – we have all sinned by breaking His law.

What is God’s law? The famous “Ten Commandments” recorded in Exodus 20:3-18 sum up God’s laws. These ten commandments can be divided into two categories: loving God (i.e. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”), and loving others (i.e “Thou shalt not steal”). When someone asked Jesus Christ what the greatest commandment was, He replied, “’Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind’. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).

No person can honestly say that they have kept all of God’s law (Romans 3:10). Not only have we failed to keep God’s law by some mere oversight, we have also openly rebelled against Him (Romans 3:12). Because God is holy and just, He must punish sin. Romans 6:23a states, “For the wages of sin is death”. This death includes physical death and eternal death separated from God in Hell (Revelation 20:14-15).

Jesus paid the penalty for YOUR sin!

In an act of such compassion and love that it defies explanation (2 Corinthians 9:15), God provided a way for each of us to be forgiven of our sins. John 3:16 explains, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Eternal life is offered to each one of us as a gift from God (Romans 6:23b). A gift cannot be earned: it must simply be received (Ephesians 2:8-9).

So what is spiritual salvation? It is when God rescues a person from the punishment they justly deserve. But before we can be saved, we must realize that we need a Saviour! The Bible talks about repentance and faith “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks [Gentiles], repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Repentance is to have a change of mind, to agree with God about our condition. Faith is to put our full trust in Christ and Christ alone for our eternal salvation.

Have YOU accepted God’s gift of salvation?

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”  (Acts 16:31).

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine hear that God hath raised him from the dead, though shalt be saved.  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9, 1:3)

Isn’t it time you opened your heart to the Lord? Call upon Jesus right now! Confess to Him that you ARE a sinner and that you can’t save yourself. Let Jesus know that you sincerely believe He died for you on the cross and rose again the third day. Ask Jesus Christ to come into your life, forgive you of your sin and save your soul. This IS why He died! He wants to save YOU right now! Won’t YOU PRAY to Him right now and claim His promise of eternal Salvation?

Couple Reading The Bible By A LakeWhat should I do now that I am saved?
